best layer of the month # September

old gals 02

Time to count how many eggs we collected in September!  Total egg count was 47 with Miss Moneypenny (centre of photo) laying 22 and Mauricette being the best layer this month, with 25.

No eggs as yet from the new gals.  No new photos either as I forgot to take photos earlier today and then the skies opened and we had lots of rain.  However, I am pleased to say, the new gals are settling in well.  There doesn’t seem to be any hen-pecking going on, although the “old gals” do tend to chase the young gals around somewhat, and are making sure they know their place.  Hens seem to keep together in pairs, with Moneypenny and Mauricette strutting about while Florence & Ruby stay at the opposite end of the enclosure, having to wait their turn to access the water fountain.  Sleeping arrangements are quite comical too, with the two old gals always heading up the ramp quite early, and getting the best places on the perches.  Florence & Ruby prefer to cuddle up together in a nesting box each night.  Whether it’s because there’s safety in numbers, or because they don’t feel comfortable sleeping on a perch yet, I don’t know.

  1. I want chickens so badly (our town doesn’t allow the residents to own them). I didn’t realize each hen would lay in her own nesting box. That’s very cool to know.

      • I keep tally lol. When you know your hens, (and it helps if they’re different breeds) each hen actually lays a particular shape/size/shell colour, so I know who lays what colour/sized/shaped egg. I collect eggs each day, so I just make a note of who laid and then have fun doing the total each month and also a “best layer of the year” post at the end of the year.

    • I’m keeping my eyes open for those first tiny eggs young hens lay . . . but seeing the colour & size of their “crête” I don’t expect them to start laying before xmas, if they decide to lay at all this winter.

  2. Glad the new girls are settling in. We are now getting about 5 eggs each day, though we are having to keep close tabs, some one(s) are trying bury the eggs in the corner! I don’t think everyone is laying yet, but it is hard to tell since they are all the same breed. We have one that is on the obnoxious side, so she may have to go to the pot if she doesn’t settle down. She’s a bit of a bully and a loud mouth!

    • lol hope your obnoxious one calms down! and yes, I deliberately have different breeds so we can keep tabs on eggs, but don’t know what the size/shape/colour the new gals will lay once they start laying. It’ll be a surprise.
